We often get asked why our ringlock standards use Q355 while ledgers use Q235. The answer is about matching the steel to the job each part does.
Why Standards Use Q355 and Ledgers Use Q235
In a ringlock system, standards carry most of the vertical load. They need a steel grade that resists buckling and bending under compression. Q355 gives us that extra margin without overbuilding the whole structure.
Ledgers work differently. They mainly tie standards together and carry horizontal loads. Q235 is easier to weld and form into the ledger end connections. Using Q235 for ledgers keeps the system practical and cost effective while still meeting the demands of the job.
What to Ask a Supplier About Steel Grade and Wall Thickness
- Confirm the grade for each part. Ask which parts are Q355 and which are Q235. A clear answer shows the supplier understands how each component works in the system.
- Check the wall thickness options. We offer 2.75, 3.0, and 3.2 mm as standard. Thicker walls add weight and cost, so the choice should match your project loads.
- Ask about the rosette spacing. Our ringlock rosettes are every 500 mm with 8 holes. This standard spacing affects ledger placement and overall flexibility.
- Inspect the welding quality. Good welding matters more than steel grade alone. Ask about the welding process and whether the supplier tests their production lines.
- Request a cut sample. A physical sample lets you check wall thickness, coating, and weld consistency before you commit to a large order.
When a Lighter Wall Is a False Economy
Some buyers ask for thinner walls to save money. In our view, that is often a false economy. A lighter wall may pass a visual check but fail under real site conditions.
We keep 2.75 mm as our minimum standard wall. Going below that risks denting, premature rust, and faster fatigue. The small upfront saving disappears when you replace parts early or deal with a site failure.
